Desmond and the Tutu's are one one of the best up and coming big name bands currently making it happen for themselves in South Africa today. I say 'big name' because I believe that is exactly what is going to happen, and if people who count don't see it here, they will just try somewhere else - that's the kind of vibe they have; love what they do, appreciate that they do it and do it well!
With a very unique sound, good timing and brilliant writing; they are the the Kooks of South Africa as well as making a mean statement to being the next Kooks of the world (the band way, not the old way!). Describing themselves as an indie/indie/pop with "an infectiously awesome blend of Rock 'n Roll, Indie Kwela Pop and Genius", they pretty much hit the nail on the head, using the raw sounds of a range of instruments they blend beautifully to create their sound; melodic, soulful, fun, introspective, youthful and natural. Clever lyrics with personal touches help you really get into their songs at a higher level than just their sound and one gets the feeling that you are hearing a story, told brilliantly by their lead singer - Shane, with the rest of the band helping tell their tales by creating the festive mood in which the stories unfold.

Signed to Awesomeland records, the quartet released a few singles including "Kiss You on the Cheek" and "Peter", with the success of these and their much spoken about live act the Desmonds as they are affectionately referred to by some of their orally lazy fans decided to release an EP - Tuck Shop. Tuck Shop became highly acclaimed within the indie-pop community within South Africa and word of mouth helped this album to be heard far and wide, with every song crafted to warm your heart, they did not put a foot wrong; for a first EP it was unrivaled. Songs such as "Peter", "Pictures", "High Five", "German Modern" and "Kiss You on the Cheek" seem to shock the first time listeners who always seem to ask; "Are these guys really South African", expecting you to agree that only European bands could create such an intimate listening experience of such high quality - especially being their 1st EP!

Their live show has also been a major factor in their success as it really does help to look forward to watching the music you look forward so much to listen to! I would strongly suggest finding a show of theirs to go to and if you can find one in a cool dark intimate club - even better as they seem to love all those who support them with profound messages and comments to their followers!
They will be releasing their new EP on 30 July, accompanied by a album release tour of South Africa which will see them playing 13 dates in July/August in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Eastern Cape, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Stellenbosch. MusicDesk will be at the Stellenbosch show and we will report back with video's, photo's and hopefully an interview! We will let you know!

We cant wait for the new EP; if it is anything like "Tuck Shop" it will be better than most of the stuff you hear these days!
They have over 100 000 myspace views and we know why! You can hear their tunes there and see what they look like too! They also have some very cool videos; they kind of collaborated with KidofDoom and both shot similar video's in the Sunningdales Hotel on Corlett Drive in Johannesburg - Desmond and the Tutu's shot "Peter" here and it was a great success! Their video for "Pictures" is honestly one of the most clever and glorious video's that MusicDesk has ever seen! Follow the hyperlinks to their video's below!

These guys are the closest we are going to come to a proper band; they write, they travel in cars (as opposed to jets), they have cool stuff on Cd's, they back it up with their show, they look good doing it, they sell t-shirts at gigs and they seem nice; so basically they are doing this music thing the legit way!
Great things are expected, we cant wait.
